On Friday, October 13, 1307, Grand Master Jacques de Molay of the Knights Templar was arrested, along with other Templar knights throughout France, as part of a larger persecution orchestrated by King Philip IV of France. This event is often cited as one of the origins of the superstition surrounding Friday the 13th. King Philip, owing a large sum of money to the Templars, had them arrested and their property seized to recover the debt.
