During Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, House Speaker Mike Johnson will display the gavel used by George Washington to lay the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol building in 1793, according to the U.S. Capitol Historical Society. The gavel is housed in the oldest Masonic lodge in Washington. Its use is meant to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Each month, students in grades K–5 work to achieve their Accelerated Reader (AR) goals. Every child who meets their monthly reading goal will have their name entered into a drawing at the end of the school year to win a brand-new bicycle and helmet. The average cost of a bike and helmet is $140, and our
