How to Become a Freemason

It’s not difficult at all to become a Mason – all you have to do is ask.

Requrirements

A candidate must be male and at least 18 years of age.

He should not have any significant criminal record.

He should be of good moral character.

He must declare a belief in some form of supreme being or deity. Who this deity is, or which religion follows it, if any, is entirely up to the candidate. No atheist can become a Freemason.

He must be a resident of the state of Iowa for at least six months prior to petitioning.

Petitioning for Membership

To petition for membership, download this form, fill it out completely, and return it along with the application fee to a member of the Lodge. If you don’t know a member, contact us and one of our members will be glad to meet with you.

What can I expect?

Upon submitting your petition for membership, it will be read at the Lodge’s next stated business meeting, held the first Thursday of each month. (You will not be present for this.)

The Worshipful Master will appoint a committee of three Brothers to meet with you and learn more about you. Typically this meeting is held in the home of the candidate, but it can also be held elsewhere. This meeting gives you the opportunity to ask us any questions you may have about Freemasonry. Your spouse or anyone who may have concerns are welcome to join, if you choose.

The committee will report to the Lodge at the next business meeting, and either recommend or not recommend your membership. (It’s a rare occurrence that the committee does not recommend membership, but it does happen.)

Upon a favorable report of recommendation, the Lodge will vote on your admittance. This vote is 100% anonymous, and must be a unanimous ballot.

Once your petition is accepted and voted upon unanimously, you will be contacted by a member of the Lodge to schedule the first of your three degrees. Often you will be contacted before the meeting is over!

In the unlikely event your petition is rejected, either by the committee or by ballot, your application fee will be refunded. You will be told the reason for rejection, and in one year you are welcome to reapply to this or any other Lodge.
